If your child could benefit from individualized support in the classroom, VPS may recommend applied behavioral analysis (ABA) services. With your insurance company’s approval, a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) will assess your child and seek approval from your insurance company to proceed with any needed services. Once services are approved, VCNH and VPS collaborate to create a holistic and personalized learning experience for your child.

Key Components of the Partnership:

1. Assessment and Individualized Planning: 

• When ABA services are initiated, the BCBA conducts an assessment to identify baseline levels of behavior and skills and determine goals for behavior reduction and skill acquisition. For clients in the school setting, the BCBA will collaborate with school staff to identify the unique needs and strengths of students. 
• A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is developed, incorporating ABA strategies to address behavioral challenges, communication difficulties, and adaptive skills. 

2. Transition Planning: 

• Smooth transitions between the VCNH clinic and the school are facilitated, ensuring consistent application of strategies and support. 
• Transition plans are developed for students moving between grade levels or to new educational settings. 

3. Training and Professional Development:

• School personnel receive training in ABA principles, equipping them with tools to implement evidence-based strategies in the classroom. 
•  BCBAs provide ongoing professional development for school staff to ensure a consistent and cohesive approach across the school environment.

4. Behavioral Consultation:

• BCBAs work closely with teachers and other school staff to address behavioral concerns. 
• Collaborative problem-solving sessions are conducted to develop effective behavior intervention plans for students. 

5. Data Collection and Analysis:

• BCBAs implement data collection systems to monitor progress and assess the effectiveness of interventions. These systems foster a data-driven approach to decision making. 

6. Integration of ABA Strategies in the Classroom:

• ABA techniques are integrated into the school curriculum. Each student will have ABA goals that their Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is working with them on throughout their day, in their natural environment and while continuing to follow the classroom schedule. RBTs work to fade themselves out of the client’s day-to-day and to ensure that the teacher maintains instructional control. 
• Examples of goals might include raising their hand when they need help or are finished with an activity, following teacher instructions, responding to peers, and meeting their needs by asking for a break or requesting a snack. 
• Classroom structure provides a supportive environment that accommodates the unique learning styles of students receiving ABA services.

7. Parental Involvement and Support:

• The BCBA conducts family training sessions to keep caregivers informed and involved in the ABA process in addition to ensuring continuity across the clinic and school settings.

8. Multi-Disciplinary Team Approach:

• Your child’s team includes BCBAs, teachers, a clinical coordinator, and support staff. Input from independent clinicians such as OTs, SLPs, and counselors may also be included. 
• Regular team meetings promote effective communication and coordination of efforts to meet the diverse needs of students.
