Assessment and Testing

overview

The multidisciplinary team at VCNH provides diagnostic evaluations in the areas of social-emotional-behavioral functioning, cognition, academics, speech-language, sensory motor skills, and brain mapping. Each assessment includes a records review as well as an interview with the family, teachers, and child.  Following testing, the team meets with the family to review results and recommendations and provide a comprehensive written report.

Each evaluation includes the use of standardized and normative assessment instruments. This means that the test is administered and scored in a specific and consistent manner and an individual’s scores are compared to the general population. In addition to these types of tools, VCNH engages in a process called dynamic testing. While standardized tests yield valuable information, they assess what a child has already learned and frequently reveal little about how a child learns. In dynamic assessment, the evaluator teaches a skill and then assesses what the child has learned. This process renders important information about how the child acquires and understands new information and responds to specific instructional techniques. This knowledge allows the team to make individualized recommendations and reflect on the validity of the child’s performance on standardized testing.
Since our evaluations are tailored to the child’s individual needs, the length of the assessment may vary, and additional assessment may be recommended. These issues will always be discussed with the child’s family.

Psychological Evaluations

VCNH provides comprehensive psychological evaluations to assess behavioral, emotional, personality and cognitive abilities. Evaluations include initial parent and/or student meeting with one of our clinicians as well as thorough behavioral, emotional and intellectual testing. Once testing is complete, our clinician will discuss the results with parents, and provide a list of recommendations.

Education Evaluations

VCNH provides educational evaluations to help identify learning disabilities as well as intellectual and academic ability. Educational evaluations include a parent and student interview, detailed family history questionnaire, detailed educator questionnaire, a variety of testing, and classroom observation. Test results along with treatment options and recommendations will be provided at the conclusion.

Psycho-educational Evaluations

VCNH provides speech-language assessments for children and adolescents to determine if therapy is needed. Assessments include a parent and child interview, informal play assessment with child and diagnostician, and a variety of testing tools based on the needs of the child. Once testing is complete, a thorough report will be discussed, along with therapy options, if necessary.
